The Nose Knows!

At Carafe™ we meet many interested (and interesting) fellow wine-lovers. Very often we are asked similar questions about wine. Here’s an example: “What’s the difference between aroma and bouquet?”

These terms describe how the wine smells to you. Aroma is present in the grapes and in the wine from the time it is first made. The aroma of a wine is the fruity fragrance associated with the grape varietals that were used to make it. Bouquet is an additional, pleasant characteristic that develops slowly in the bottle, over time. In a young wine the aroma is more pronounced. Eventually, the more complex fragrance of the bouquet will often replace the grape aroma. The word “nose” is a general term used to describe the overall sensory characteristics of a wine including its aroma and bouquet.

When you first pour a glass of wine, gently swirl the wine. This will bring out the smell and enhance the aroma. Take a quick sniff to acquaint yourself with it – clearing out other smells in your brain. Then, put your nose right in the glass and inhale deeply. Continue swirling and sniffing to fully appreciate the nuances in the nose. There are countless possibilities to discover!

Does it remind you of a flower scent? If so, it can be called "floral". Or, it may be "grassy" like a freshly mown lawn - typical of a Sauvignon Blanc. Anything that smells like a chemical is considered an off-odor which usually means the wine has undergone some undesirable microbiological change. The absence of any off-odors is described as having a “clean nose”. We always try to keep our noses clean at Carafe!
